Copper-nickel alloys, also known as cupronickel, are a family of metal blends primarily of copper and nickel, with small amounts of iron and manganese. They are highly valued for their excellent resistance to corrosion in seawater, making them ideal for marine and industrial applications like piping, heat exchangers, and condensers. Other key properties include good mechanical strength, low biofouling rates, and excellent fabricability.
Corrosion resistance: Superior resistance to corrosion in seawater and other chloride-containing environments due to a protective surface layer that forms over time.
Strength: The addition of nickel increases strength and the ability to retain strength at elevated temperatures compared to pure copper.
Biofouling resistance: Have a high inherent resistance to the attachment of marine organisms like mussels and seagrasses.
Fabricability: Good fabricability and are highly resistant to stress corrosion cracking and hydrogen embrittlement.
